Coastal Modern Style

Waterfront, Riverside, CT

This new 8,000-square-foot Coastal Modern Style residence is situated on a one-acre site in Riverside, Connecticut, overlooking Long Island Sound. The dramatic topography of the property—defined by its steep cliffside—presented both a challenge and an opportunity to create a modern home of exceptional beauty and distinction.

The architectural concept began with the client’s desire to capture panoramic water views. While the top of the cliff offered the most striking vantage point, it did not allow for a building footprint of sufficient scale. The design solution was both bold and innovative: integrating the residence into the cliffside itself. This approach created a multi-level home with several terraces and retaining walls that gracefully step down to the water, transforming the site into a layered composition of architecture, landscape, and outdoor living.

The exterior draws inspiration from both traditional and transitional forms, blending slate gable roofs with a 45-degree pitch, stone chimney masses, and standing-seam metal dormers. Horizontal shiplap wood siding, paired with stone accents and expansive metal-framed windows and doors, brings warmth and texture while reinforcing a contemporary edge.

Inside, the home transitions seamlessly into a sophisticated yet welcoming interior. Vaulted ceilings, custom cabinetry, and finely crafted millwork define the spaces, balancing openness with intimacy. Expansive gathering areas support family living and entertaining, while quiet retreats provide privacy and comfort. Large divided-light windows flood the home with natural light and frame curated views, forging a strong connection between indoors and out.

The result is a residence that merges site-sensitive design, architectural innovation, and artisanal craftsmanship—an enduring waterfront home that embodies the spirit of Coastal Modern living.
