Traditional Shingle Style

This new 10,000 square foot mid-country "Traditional Shingle Style Residence" is located on a one-acre site in Greenwich, Connecticut. The current owners had a strong affection for their property, located on a private road, and decided that they would raze their 4,000 square foot garrison colonial house to build the home of their dreams. The site, which is nestled into the hillside, presented several challenges. The first was to define a first floor elevation that allowed access to an established rear terrace while creating an elegant terraced entry procession from the existing driveway elevation to the arched stone-front entry. The second was to make a strong design element on the uphill side of the property, which was created by establishing a gable roof with a large elliptical window flanked with custom wood brackets on the rake end. The main floor stone veneer allowed the residence to comfortably sit into the landscape while accommodating the sloping grades.

The exterior of the residence was designed incorporating traditional "Shingle Style" detailing including; gable roof with long slopes, stone chimney masses, hipped-roof dormers, shingle siding and multi-light sash windows. Traditional detailing transitions into the interior, with the use of flat panel wainscot, coffered ceilings, wood trim, and two-panel wood doors. The interior of this traditional home transcends itself into a "Transitional Design Style" with the merging of contemporary artwork, light fixtures, furniture, ceiling treatment, and the white oak floor with an ebony finish.
