A Highlight on Litchfield County

Litchfield County has long been a weekend retreat for New York City residents which includes the picturesque towns of New Preston, Kent, New Milford, Litchfield, Bantam, and Washington. With something for everyone: art galleries, outdoor activities, shopping and great food, a weekend home in the country is becoming a hot spot for eager buyers looking for a full-time residence outside the city. Litchfield County, located in Connecticut’s northwest hills has seen 2,000+ people move recently from NYC to Litchfield.

The rich history of the town has been kept alive through modernist twists on the classic colonial architecture. Litchfield holds tradition and patriotism close to heart, which is reflected through the New England town’s shingle styled, farm-like residencies.

The fine houses and impressive educational institutions of Litchfield have set the area apart from others and in turn, has made a reputable name for itself amongst the architectural community. With Covered bridges, forests, and rivers, the scenery will take your breath away. Modern farmhouse style architecture is prominent in Litchfield County and marries modern and vintage elements. This new 12,000 square foot "Modern Farmhouse Style Residence" completed by the SMA team is the perfect mix of contemporary yet country— modern farmhouse style marries the best of old and new.

Connecticut has the longest fall foliage season in New England, and since it’s peaking for the next few weeks, there’s never been a better time to share a highlight on SMA’s favorite Litchfield County Towns.

KENT
From kayaking at Lake Waramaug to the cozy Inn at Kent Falls housed in a restored 18th-century farmhouse, Kent is one of Connecticut’s most mesmerizing towns. Nearby Hopkins Vineyard, is one of our favorite places to watch the foliage and relax with a glass of wine from estate-grown pinot noir grapes.

WASHINGTON
For the ultimate country retreat that defines New England elegance, the grand Mayflower Grace, a secluded 58-acre property that strikes the perfect balance between classic country resort and laid-back new age retreat is located in the idyllic town of Washington. The Gunn Historical Museum offers a menu of programming and events for the community, like the first of the Gunn Historical Museum’s Artist Series lectures starting this month.

BANTAM
High-end shoe brand Manolo Blahnik’s President and VP, George Malkemus and Tony Yurgaitis, are the farmers behind Arethusa Farm located in Bantam. With its creamery roots dating back to the mid-1800s, this dairy farm provides the richest milk in all of Connecticut.

Litchfield seems like an unlikely place to look for Modernist architecture and yet, it is home to literally dozens of significant Modernist buildings, designed by some of the era's most prominent architects.
