Riverside Retreat: Luxury Home Overlooking the Sound
The 8,000 square-foot Coastal Modern Style residence is located on a one-acre site in Riverside, Connecticut. It was intentionally designed to be defined by its relationship to the landscape, ensuring the Long Island Sound is never out of reach.
Steven Mueller Architects knew the project required a careful response to the challenges of cliffside construction. Every inch of this home was built to let the client enjoy captivating views from every floor. We followed an approach that allowed the architecture to follow the natural topography, preserving views and creating a layered sequence of interior and exterior spaces.
Building with the Landscape
Key Elements That Define The Exterior Architecture
The exterior blends traditional and contemporary design; we wanted a refined, yet approachable aesthetic. A few key elements that helped us achieve a visual balance, function, and flow include:
A 45-degree pitch slate gable roof clad in DaVinci Slate
Standing-seam metal shed dormers
Lead copper gutters and trim
Horizontal shiplap wood siding and stone accents
Expansive metal-framed windows and divided-light doors
A Look At The Interior Architecture
Inside, the home balances generous gathering spaces with moments of intimacy. Ten-foot ceilings and white oak flooring establish a consistent rhythm throughout the main living areas. A few of our favorite features are as follows:
The foyer has direct sightlines through the home, overlooking the Sound.
Oak is a prominent material throughout. The primary staircase features a custom oak handrail and wood wainscot paneling.
The kitchen was meticulously designed on an open floor plan. We added dual islands, granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and a coiffured ceiling.
There’s ample space for prepping, cooking, and hosting. A mudroom with custom cabinetry and a rolling ladder provides functional access to upper storage.
There are a handful of spaces designed for gathering. These rooms were meant to feel elevated and welcoming. One of these is the family room, which represents a sophisticated, warm interior. The second is the dining area, positioned between the kitchen and family room to balance openness and connection.
Mirroring the interior, we extend this to the outdoor spaces as well. It was integral to the home's experience.
Upper-level balconies and a lower-level pool terrace oriented toward the water.
Integrated heaters and retractable screens for year-round use.
