Springing Into 2021: Bringing The Indoors Outside

Backyards are used for much more than just relaxing these days. At SMA, we consider the outdoors an extension of your home. Your backyard is used to socialize, exercise, dine and more. From pools to fireplaces, decks and gardens, the possibilities are endless. With today’s advanced technology for outdoor fabrics, furniture and electronics you can easily transform your outdoor space into additional living space.

Balconies, terraces, and patios are being reintroduced as major design elements this year. If properly conditioned and maintained these spaces can be enjoyed throughout the year depending on climate. Creating a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors is a goal of many of our design projects. With the ultimate goal of enhancing the lives of the occupants by developing practical, dynamic, and creative solutions.

“Design and gardening enthusiasts have likely heard of the term "biophilic design," which is a concept used to increase one's connectivity to nature through architecture. As most of us—and our family members—have been doing essentially everything at home for nearly a year, creating a natural flow between indoors and out will not only maximize your home's space, but it will also give you a much-needed mental boost.”

Here are a few of our favorite SMA backyards:

This new 12,000 square foot "Modern Farmhouse Style Residence" is located in an RA-2 Zone on 3.7 acres in mid-country Greenwich, Connecticut. The privacy and severity of the topography of the property provided the client with the opportunity to design and construct the Modern Farmhouse of their dreams. Central to the architectural design concept was to locate the new residence at the edge of the cliff providing for stunning views of the pool and lake below

Inspired by the French Normandy Architectural Style, this new 11,000 square foot home is located on 15 plus acres in the gated community of Conyers Farm in Greenwich, Connecticut. Rear retaining walls integrate the plantings, pool and terrace areas to establish tiered levels transitioning you from the main house down another 18'-0" to the back lawn.

This new 12,000 square foot "Coastal English Manor Style Residence" is located in an RA-1 Zone on 2.0 acres (87,120 sf) in Riverside, Connecticut. The oversized property allowed the client to construct the English Manor Estate that accommodated his program requirements in this prestigious shoreline community, while respecting the scale of the neighboring homes.
